Festival of Senses Report – Cath
Reynolds
Less than 50% of the evaluations were returned. Based on those received it is clearly an
event members feel is worth repeating and worth the time and effort preparing
for.
A suggestion was made that anyone interested could join the
festival committee. Planning for the
2010 Festival will begin in March.
Chris Fleming suggested that we set aside some time to
discuss and brainstorm the event at our next meeting in April. It will be added to the agenda.
Proposal - Welcome Wagon
(GMT) – Skip Hale
After attending a symposium involving the libraries across Ontario, Skip reports that “libraries will be the hub of the community”. Libraries are encouraged to reach out into the community as our GM library has been doing for some time now, thanks to Skip’s energy and imagination.
To enable one such outreach program is the formation of a
committee to look at welcoming new members into the community (much along the
lines of ‘welcome wagon’).
A welcome package will be put together including a letter
from Reeve and CAO, information about the community, a copy of the Highlander
and CABA business directory, tourist map etc.
What can CABA do to help?
Provide our business cards, coupons, referrals etc.
According to Mike Labelle there are 40-50 new families
moving into our area each year. (Peter Emon added that 1100 families had moved into the area in
the 10 years from 1996-2006)

Burnstown
Business Report
An informal report was offered by Kim of Neat Coffee in
Burnstown. She said she feels there was
less traffic through the village during the Festival of Lights. She also believes there was less advertising
done this year than previous years. The
next festival in the spring will be a joint effort, partnering with Burnstown.
Harmonization
Sales Tax – Kristina Chapman
Since the last CABA meeting in June, Kristina has been
trying to contact someone in the Ministry of Finance office. The outcome seems to be that no one is
particularly interested in coming to explain the ramifications of the blended
tax, what its impact will be on businesses and on the consumer. According to the most recent news the first
amendment has passed.
Deb read highlights of an article she found in the Financial
Post and encouraged everyone to get in touch with our MMP to register an
opinion.
-
Bridges to Better Business
-
This recent workshop emphasized the
importance of networking. Bring your
business cards with you wherever you go (never leave home without them!) Deb encouraged all members to bring them to
the CABA meetings.
-
-
Ottawa Valley Tourism Authority
Annual Conference
-
This was an important event for the
Peaks specifically, for Calabogie in general.
There were 87 attendees. CABA
President was a member of the “Meet and Greet” team.
-
-
Broadband Outreach Program
-
Attendance at this workshop was
disappointing, however, 80% of the attendees signed up for a new broadband
connection.
Springtown will be connected very
soon.
Black Donald will go live in mid
January.
-
Ottawa Valley Business Directory
-
Deb informs all members that this
directory is a free on-line registration of your business information. She encourages everyone to “get their
business listing on-line”. Go to
-
www.ottawavalleydirectory.ca.
OTHER BUSINESS - NEW AND OLD
Chris
Fleming
At our last meeting Chris provided
a display rack of business cards of Pakenham area businesses. The rack is being used by businesses in Pakenham to promote each other. Chris requested that Diana Bowl, company
representative attend our next meeting to present a detailed information
package along with costs.
Bill Graham & Richard Copeland
(Madawaska Highlander) reported on the Matawatchan
Road meeting they recently attended.
This county road project was supposed to be completed by 2008, but
because of legal issues and environmental issues a mere 1/3 of the repair has
been completed leaving 2/3 to be completed by 2014.
This
concerns people in the Calabogie area because it is an important corridor by
which visitors enter our area.
Peter Emon said that the County ran out of money and the 8
million needed to complete the road will be meted out at 2 million a year
(hence the 2014 completion date)

The information from the most recent census by Statistics Canada for the Township of Greater Madawaska is readily available and interesting.
The same holds true for the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (known as the Champlain LHIN) for the County of Renfrew.
Those statistics paint an uncomfortable picture of the community's health needs and show the needs to be increasing.
For example, our population is getting older, weighs too much, smokes and has diabetes: all to a greater extent than most other areas.
In May of 2009, Council approved establishing the Greater Madawaska Health Committee.
Roughly, the Terms of Reference for the Committee ask it to:
explore possibilities such as financing, service delivery models (clinic, nurse practioner led, medical doctor led, ...)
liaise with any helpful group
make preliminary recommendations to Council by year's end.
Treena Lemay talked to the Health Committee. She was instrumental in getting the Family Health Team up and running in Petawawa. She has a wealth of information and advice.
Family Health Team = Community Health Centre.
pharmacy
sampling for laboratory tests
mental health
physiotherapy
preventative health care
walk-in clinic.
Early in its life, the Committee was called upon to complete and submit a grant application for the Family Health Team Wave 4
The grant application was completed by the Committee and then approved by Council.
It was submitted with support from our MP, our MPP and Renfrew Victoria Hospital.
No news has been received. This is not surprising given the turmoil which went on in the Ministry just after the deadline for submission and the continuing financial stress on our governments.
You should note that our application also included letters showing that Drs Max Buxton and Kristian Davis have both committed to being involved with our health team.
The current medical centre is owned by the Township of Greater Madawaska: this is a big plus.
The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (OMHLC) funds everything in one of their facilities, but the Ministry is disinclined to build a facility and would rather rent. So it would pay rent per square foot.
Physician compensation is by the Ministry based on its scheme.
Our municipal buildings and their location, in the future, may change.
Steps are being taken to create a non-profit corporation out of the Health Committee.
Nurse practitioner led clinics are controversial be that in the media, in proposed legislation or in communities.
Nurse practitioner = 0.95 medical doctor
The bottom line appears to be, "There is no other option: work with it."
We'll see how things progress.
calming flavour
Max and Kristian have no immediate changes in mind
try for volunteers for a French resource for this kind of information exchange
what is being done, e.g. application, funding, buildings, new services (with or without grants)
feedback
openness
Bill Beacham presented a progress report of the committee set to study the feasibility of seniors’ housing in the Township of Greater Madawaska. There is a need in our community as 50 % of our population is over 50.
: The committee was formed this past summer and includes representatives from across the municipality
: A survey was sent out with last tax bill looking to find the needs and wants of the community followed by public meetings in Calabogie and Griffith
: The committee made a request to CABA for a letter of support
: Committee continues to gather facts and feedback, and is applying to CMHC for seed funding to facilitate various planning aspects including possible environmental impact and the development of a business plan
: Council will provide land and a non-profit organization will be set up to run the project.
: Members have looked at Eganville as a recent example.
: It is a little too early in development to say how this project will eventually look or function. Social, economic, health and transportation issues all must be considered.
: The committee will endeavor to foster a public and private partnership. Current funding proposal is aimed at subsidized housing. Private development might make funding easier.
Motion was passed Dec. 7, 2009 that CABA write a letter to the township committee in support of this project including applying to CMHC for seed funding.
